STRATFORD EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE

Return to EMS Home Page

About Us

The Stratford Emergency Medical Service was established in December of 1977 by the Town of Stratford (Connecticut) to provide emergency medical services to its community. We prove 24 hour coverage, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The guiding principle of the organization is the same today as when it was founded: to provide quality patient care and safe emergency transportation to the sick and injured of our community. We respond to approximately 5,000 calls each year.Stratford EMS is more than an ambulance service; we are an innovator in the field of emergency medical services. Stratford EMS was one of the first services in the nation to adopt and use semi-automatic external defibrillators, serving as the pilot site for the state of Connecticut in 1986. In 1996, we became the first volunteer paramedic service in New England, and we remain so today. In 1997, we established one of the nation's first medical bike units.

Explorer Post 4911

Explorer Post 4911 is an emergency medical services-oriented youth organization, sponsored by the Connecticut Yankee Council of the Boy Scouts of America and chartered by Stratford EMS. Established in September of 1991, the post affords young men and women between the ages of 14 and 21 the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the fields of emergency medicine and emergency services, rescue, business administration, and fund raising. The foundation of this organization is built on words like respect, trust, responsibility, compassion, knowledge, skill, love, motivation, community and professionalism. Members must demonstrate a commitment to their family, their education, and the post. Last year, Explorer Post 4911 successfully piloted the High School Response Program, whereby ambulances were staffed by EMT-certified Explorers one day per week and responded to emergency calls from Bunnell High School.

Explorer Post 4911 meets each Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM in the Training Room at Stratford EMS Headquarters. For more information on Explorer Post 4911, including how to join, send an e-mail to Captain Jon Best or call us at (203) 385-4060.

Special Operations Division

The Special Operations Division (SOD) was originally established in 1987 to provide services for mass casualty incidents in the Town of Stratford. Over time, the division's role has evolved to providing support services for a variety of large incidents.  SOD provides pre-planning and stand-by coverage for mass gatherings such as the annual fireworks display and Stratford Day celebrations.

This team has additional training and skills, such as setting up an EMS command post, field treatment tent, and staging areas for other responding units.  The vehicle assigned to SOD also contains a variety of auxiliary equipment, such as mass care and treatment supplies, lighting, all-terrain stretcher, stokes basket litter, generator, and communications equipment.

For more information on the Special Operations Division, send an e-mail to Captain Jon Best or call us at (203) 385-4060.

Medical Bike Unit

The Medical Bike Unit (MBU) was the first of its kind in the region.  Members utilize bike patrols to provide EMS services during events where access to patients might otherwise be difficult.  Events include the Town's annual Stratford Day and fireworks display.  Bike units may also patrol the beach areas at times.  Bike patrols respond with first aid equipment, oxygen, and a defibrillator.

For more information on the Medical Bike Unit, send an e-mail to Captain Ken Kellogg or call us at (203) 385-4060.

From time to time, we will feature documents in the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). The Adobe Acrobat Reader application is required to these documents. Click the icon to the left for more details.
