Free Oral Health Screenings

In January 2003, the Stratford Health Department began an oral health screening program through a regional ORBIT initiative targeting first and third grade students in public and parochial schools. These students were targeted because they are most likely getting their first permanent molars-the teeth that will be with them for a lifetime. Tooth decay often develops soon after eruption, and usually on molars. Molars have many grooves and pits on the biting surfaces where bacteria can easily collect.

There is a connection between a healthy mouth and a healthy body. Bleeding gums, visible root surfaces and loose teeth are not normal at any age. These are usually signs of an infection called periodontal (gum) disease. Increasing medical evidence suggests that an unhealthy mouth may worsen serious medical problems, like heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Making the choice to practice good oral hygiene at home every day will make a big difference in the overall look and feeling. One of the main goals of our dental screening program was the education. The dental screening program was instrumental in teaching proper dental hygiene and making smart nutritional choices.

This program concluded in January 2008. Stratford Health Department provided free oral health screening to 5,232 children. Parents of children identified with a potential problem were notified and encouraged to seek care with their own dental provider or through the School Dental Program.
