The History of Public Health Nursing
|
Lillian Wald, Founder of the Henry Street Settlement, in 1889, first used the term “public health nurse” when visiting nurses provided direct care to the sick in their homes. The nurses not only cared for the ill but also taught families basic hygiene, sanitation, and health practices.
For well over 100 years, public health nurses have been performing these and many other health services to help protect and promote public health.

Our Public Health Nurses provide numerous services to protect and restore health for both adults and children. With the goal of working for a healthy community, the Nurses provide routine health screenings along with patient education and blood pressure screenings. Throughout the year, our nurses also conduct routine childhood immunizations, and flu and pneumonia clinics.
Stratford’s Public Health Nurses are also responsible for the monitoring and following up of communicable disease cases, such as Tuberculosis. Our Public Health Nurses are responsive and caring to those in need. The public health nursing office is located at the Birdseye Municipal Complex. Please call the office at 203-385-4058 for more information.
