All program registrations take place at the Recreation Office at Short Beach Park unless noted in the description. All Programs Subject To Change. Non-residents may take particular classes for an additional $5 fee.

Adult Fitness Programs

Zumba      524180-Section 03,04 & 05

The Stratford Recreation Department is offering a Zumba class at the Baldwin Center. This class is a great combination of intervals of Latin dance that let you burn major calories & develop physical fitness while you are having fun. The cost of the class is $80 for the sixteen classes. 

Zumba Beginner                    Sept 8 – Nov 3            M/W 6:30-7:30pm

Zumba Intermediate            Sept 7 – Oct 28            T/TH 5:30-6:30pm

Zumba w/Weights                  Sept 8 – Nov 3            M/W 5:30-6:30pm

Registration begins August 9.  The second session for Mon/Wed classes is Nov 8 – Jan 5.  The second session for Tue/Thurs classes is Nov 2 – Jan 4. Registration for the second sessions begins October 4.

W.W.W. Workout with Weights     524180-Section 21 & 25

The class incorporates upper and lower body conditioning and toning. This class will need an exercise ball, weights & elastic bands. The class meets on Tuesday and Thursday at the Baldwin Center from 6:30-7:30 pm.  The fee is $80 for sixteen classes.  The next session begins September 7 – October 28.  Registration begins August 9.  The second session is Nov 2 – Jan 4.  Registration begins October 4.

We are now offering a class on Fridays.  Classes start September 10 and run through October 29.  . Registration is August 9 – September 3. The second session is Nov 5 – Jan 14, no class Nov 26, Dec 24, and Dec 31. Registration starts October 4 .

Baggy T’s- Exercise for Everyone          524180          Section 60, 61

Musically driven class combines different exercise types, including low impact aerobics, toning, and flexibility training to create a total body workout. Class use dumbbells and elastic tubing for resistance.  Class meets on Monday and Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Baldwin Center for 16 classes and begins January 10.  Registration is December 6 – 24Fee is $80 for the 8 weeks. 

 

Head to Toe Fitness      524180-Section 34

This class is a one-hour workout that targets all of the 3 important exercise components – cardio, strength and flexibility.  It incorporates a low impact cardio warm up, strength training and toning using hand weights and a stretching and cool-down segment.  It is recommended for beginner to intermediate fitness levels.  The class will be Tuesday and Thursdays from 6:00-7:00 pm for 8 weeks at Flood School Aux Gym.  The class begins September 14-November 4.  Cost is $80 for 16 classes.  Registration is August 23-September 10. A second session will be offered November 9 - January 18 with no class November 11, 25, December 23, 28 or 30. Registration will take place October 12 - November 5.

Tuesday and Thursday Night Yoga      520200-Section 01,02,03,04

Improve your concentration and body tone.  This 10 week class meets on Tuesday nights beginning September 21 from 6:00-7:30 pm and 7:30–9:00 pm at the Baldwin Center.  On Tuesday the early class is for beginners and the 7:30 pm class is for advanced students.  The Thursday night class begins September 23 with the 6:00 pm class for advanced students and the 7:30 pm class for beginners.  Registration is August 24-September 18.  The fee is $80.

Adult Boxing Fitness:

This class is for adults who want to get into shape. The class will meet on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 - 7:30pm.

The cost is $125 for six weeks or 12 classes. Registration is August 23 - September 10. Class begins September 13 - October 25.  Next session begins November 1 - December 13. Registration is October 18 - October 27.

Adult Intermediate Swim Lessons     211270-Section 93 & 94

These lessons are designed for adults who have minimal or no swimming experience.  Class is on Monday and Wednesdays from September 13-October 18 from 8:00-8:30 pm.  Registration is August 30-September 8.  Fee is $30.  A second session is November 1-December 6 with registration October 18-26.

 

Salt Water Fishing      419630- Section 43

Experience the thrills of learning to catch salt water fish!  Come learn the techniques of saltwater fishing. The class will be from 6-8pm at the Birdseye Complex on Thursday August 26 and on Saturday August 28 at 12pm at Bonds Dock. The Saturday class will be an actual day of fishing. The program is $5.00.  The registration is August 2 – August 20.

Dog Obedience Classes      549070-Sections 21-24, 31 & 34

The Recreation Department has contracted with The Refined Canine Company to offer the following classes at Birdseye Municipal Complex.

Puppy Socialization Class  Section 21

For puppies 10 weeks to 6 months old.  Includes confidence building exercises, building a relationship with each family member, introducing puppy to different people and dogs.  Emphasis on forming a strong bond and a family dog.  Topics related to raising a puppy and preventing behavior problems are a major aspect of this 7-week course.  This class is largely off-leash, where the puppies get to interact with one another, and learn impulse control and bite inhibition, and teaching them to listen and obey cues off-leash, right from the start! Class runs on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30pm.

Basic Obedience Class  Section 22 & 23

For dogs 5 months and up.  This is a beginner level course which strengthens the relationship between owner and dog by creating a common language while setting a foundation for future raining using Positive Reinforcement.  This 7 week course concentrates on the five basic obedience exercises: Heel, Sit, Stay, Down and Come.  We also cover good manners for the family pet, addressing problems such as barking, chewing, jumping and stealing.  Class runs on Tuesdays from 7:45-8:45pm OR Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30pm.

Intermediate Class  Section 24

This is for dogs that have already completed a basic obedience class and know the five basic exercises.  Distractions and proofing techniques are added slowly.  Introduction to off-leash work. This class is structured to be fun for dogs and owners alike, with AKC Canine Good Citizen test, as well as games and tricks to enhance the learning experience.  Class is on Wednesdays from 7:45-8:45 pm.

Classes are once per week for 7 weeks at Birdseye Municipal Complex.  First session begins September 14 or 15 through October 26 or 27.  The second session begins November 9 through December 21. There will be no Wednesday classes in the second session.   For further information, please contact “the Refined Canine” at (203) 932-2364 (2DOG).  The class fee is $75 for Stratford residents and$80 for non-residents.  Please do not bring your dog to the first class.

Dogs & Storks      549070-Sections 28 & 26

Presented by Michelle Douglas, Certified Dog Behavior Consultant and Certified Pet Dog Trainer, the Dogs and Storks semi private workshop is designed to help families prepare for life with kids and dogs.  Siblings have classes, why not the dog?  We cover canine behavior, and how your dog may respond to infant, toddler and preschooler’s behaviors and activities.  The fee is $45 per couple.  Class meets on November 4 from 6:30-8:30pm. Registration is October 18-29.  Please do not bring the dog.

Adult Tennis Lessons      422360-Sections 21 & 22

Adult lessons will start on Tuesdays, September 14-October 12 at the Flood Tennis Courts.  They will meet from 6:05-7:05 pm for beginners/advanced beginners and 7:05-8:05 pm for Low Intermediate/Intermediate.  Cost is $95 for six weeks.  Registration begins August 2 – September 3.  There must be six people registered for each class to be held.

Karate Program      542580-Sections 07-12 & 13-17

Learn Karate from professional instructors in a safe and fun environment.  The lessons build confidence, focus and discipline.  The next session begins August 30 – October 22 at Franklin School.  Registration is August 2 – 27 at the Recreation Office.  The next session is October 25-December 17.  Registration is September 20 - October 22.

Adult Golf Lessons      222450-Sections 21

Golf lessons will be offered on Wednesdays from 6-7 pm at Short Beach beginning September 15.  The five-week class is $40.  Registration is September 1-September 11 at the Recreation Office.

Paul King Big Band Sound

The Paul King Band will play at the Baldwin Center on Sunday, December 5 from 1-3:00 pm in a concert sponsored by the Stratford Recreation Department and the Senior Services.  The concert is free and open to the general public.  We ask that attendees bring a canned good to be donated to the local food banks.

Stratford Community Concert Band

The Stratford Community Concert Band was founded in 1961, providing area musicians of all ages and skill levels with a place to rehearse and perform together.  Current members range in age from middle-schoolers to middle-agers, to seniors, and represent a wide variety of professions.  The common bond has always been a love of music.

The band performs annual gazebo concerts on Paradise Green, along with a Holiday concert, with occasional other engagements as they arise.

There are no auditions for membership and there are no fees for music or rehearsals. The only requirements for continuing membership are average performing ability on a standard band instrument and reasonable regularity in attending rehearsals.  Band meets at Stratford High School from 7:30-9:30pm Tuesday evenings.
