Stratford Recreation Department

What's New as of August 26, 2010

Short Beach Happenings - Greek Night at Short Beach Concession Stand on Sat Aug 28 from 5-10 pm
Jim Slaten at the Concession Stand on Sat Sept 4 from 1-7 pm, Reggae artists, Fresh Band, at the Concession on Sun Sept 5 from 2-6 pm and the Mix on Sun Sept 12 from 3-5 pm.

Birdseye Boxing Club     512120-Section 02, 03, 04, 05

The Recreation Department has a Boxing and Conditioning program on Monday and Wednesday nights at the Birdseye Complex. The program is year round. There is a fee of $50 for the eight-week program.  All members must pay an annual $40 insurance fee to USA Boxing Association of America. The club will include body fitness as well as correct boxing technique. Registration for September begins August 16-September 3.  The parent meeting will be September 1 at 6:00 pm at the Birdseye Complex.  To learn more about the program call 385-4052.  Program begins September 8-November 3.  Next session is November 8-January 10 with registration October 25-November 5.

Beginners Class will meet 5:00-5:30 pm on Monday and Wednesday. 

Advanced Class is for those students who have been in the Birdseye Boxing Club previously or has boxing experience. This class meets twice a week on Monday and Wednesday from 5:30pm – 6:30 pm.

Adult Boxing Fitness:

This class is for adults who want to get into shape. The class will meet on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 - 7:30pm.

The cost is $125 for six weeks or 12 classes. Registration is August 23 - September 10. Class begins September 13 - October 25.  Next session begins November 1 - December 13. Registration is October 18 - October 27.

Adult Intermediate Swim Lessons     211270-Section 93 & 94

These lessons are designed for adults who have minimal or no swimming experience. Class is on Monday and Wednesdays from September 13-October 18 from 8:00-8:30 pm. Registration is August 30-September 8. Fee is $30. A second session is November 1-December 6 with registration October 18-26.

 

Skateboard Birthday Parties

These parties feature a combination of open skate and instructional time. Instructions will include proper stretching techniques, park awareness, skills and tricks are based upon age and ability of party. A Semi Pro skater runs the parties. Helmets are required for participants and safety equipment is optional but encouraged. Fee is $80 for up to 19 kids. Held at Short Beach Skate Park from 10:00am-11:45 am on Saturdays through October.

Skateboard Lessons

Skating lessons will be taught be a Semi-Pro skater at Short Beach Slate Park, for ages 7 and up proper stretching and warm-ups, park awareness, skateboard handling and safety. Registration is August 16-September 13. Beginner Class will promote proper form and posture, stopping, curbs and tic taks. Class held from 4:00-5:00pm. Cost is $70 for 6 weeks on Mondays beginning September 20. Intermediate class will go into more advanced tricks, which may include kick turns, carve, grinds, drop ins, axle tails, ollies, stalls and tail tops. Class held from 5:00-6:00pm. Cost is $70 for 6 weeks on Mondays beginning September 17.

 Art and the Artists Programs

These programs are new art classes for children age 2-10. Registration is August 16-September 17.

 

Budding Artists is art for children ages 2-3 with a caregiver. The children will hear a story, then by using their senses, will create their own masterpieces, which will make connections between art and the book. Through painting, drawing, sculpting and different art materials they will be creating an expression of themselves. Class is caregiver participation. Fee is $55 for 8 weeks. Class is held at the South End Community Center on Tuesdays from 1:00-1:45pm, beginning September 21.

Emergent Artists is an art class for children ages 4-6.The children will hear a story and will practice a new art skill taken from the story. The children will investigate and become art detectives, observing how the illustrator created the images in the book. The children will recreate and design their own artwork based on the illustrator’s style. Fee is $55 for 8 weeks. Class is held at the Birdseye Complex on Thursdays from 4:00-4:45pm beginning September 23.

Advanced Artists is an art program for children ages 7-10. They will look at the elements and design of award-winning books. They will be introduced to a variety of vocabulary to help learn the basic concepts of art. Artwork will be based on a combination of artistic elements to create their own composition. Fee is $55 for 8 weeks. Class is held at the Birdseye Complex on Tuesdays from 4:00-4:45pm beginning September 21

Moonbounce Birthday Parties

These parties are held on Saturdays at the Birdseye Complex. Open bounce and gym time is for 1 hour and the café for refreshments for 45 minutes. Cost is $110 for up to 19 kids. An additional 10 kids may be added for $25 fee. Parties are for ages 2-10

Nature Walking Program

Come join Connecticut Master Wildlife Conservationist, David Wright, for informative spring and summer discovery walks, “Exploring Natural Stratford – Forest to Shore”.  Walk Stratford’s shore and trails and see them as you have never seen them before.  Get in shape while enjoying the great outdoors.  Advanced Registration requested.

The mission of the Recreation Department is to provide quality, affordable recreational services to enable the entire community to utilize their leisure time, and to enhance the quality of life. We provide individuals with facilities and programs through which they have an opportunity for social interaction, to improve their physical conditioning, to develop new skills, and to enjoy safe, wholesome, and satisfying activities. We also establish cooperation with community and area agencies to complement, or supplement their services.

Additionally, we maintain and schedule over 30 acres of Short Beach Park including a Par 3 Golf Course, softball fields, soccer field, tennis courts, playground, beach volleyball courts and picnic area.

Recreation Department offices are closed Monday September 6, Monday October 11, Thursday November 11, Thursday and Friday November 25 & 26, Friday December 24 and Friday December 31.

The Recreation Department accepts cash, checks, VISA and MasterCard and American Express.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Registration for programs must be made in advance of the first session. Program fees must accompany all registrations. All registration will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis until the maximum registration is reached. To be sure of a place in the program early registration is urged. In some cases, late registration will be accepted if space is still available; however, program fees are not pro-rated. Late registering persons must pay the full registration fee. There is a $5 non resident fee for classes which accept non residents.  Programs may be canceled for insufficient enrollment.  The Recreation Department staff has made every effort to keep this website up to date and accurate.  However program listings/information may require that adjustments be made at the last minute to programs, fees, schedules etc.  We apologize in advance for any errors or for any inconvenience these errors may cause.

Programs open to everyone

An individual(s) with a disability are welcome to enjoy the programs offered by the Department. Anyone who needs special assistance to participate in the programs should contact the Recreation Department.

OnLine Registration

Participants may register for most programs by email.  You must have a user id and password to use the online registration program.  Please call the Recreation Office to obtain your user id and password.

Scholarships & Discounts

Senior Citizens Discount for those 62 and older is 50% for most programs.  Scholarships are available for some programs. Just complete the application at the Recreation Department office at Short Beach. Please submit your most current income tax return form.  Scholarship requests must be submitted 4 weeks prior to the program and for camp programs by May 15.  A decision will be made by May 29.  Family rates for multiple classes, and second and third child discounts are also available for most programs.  Those applying for childcare scholarships are encouraged to apply for Care For Kids.  Applications may be obtained at the Recreation Department at Short Beach and South End Center.  Discount rates are for siblings in the same immediate family.  

Cancelation Policy

Recreation Department programs are no longer automatically canceled when schools are closed. A decision on programs will be made by 4:00 p.m. Listen to WICC or watch WTNH for cancelations or call the Recreation Department 385-4129 after 4:00 p.m.

Refund Policy

The Recreation Department will refund money only when:

  1. The department cancels the class
  2. A medical excuse is obtained
  3. The participant has taken only the first class
  4. When a replacement is obtained

All other refunds will be pro rated plus a $10 administrative fee will be charged per program. There are no refunds for camps unless a replacement is found.

Canceled Checks

Checks returned for insufficient funds will be charged a $15 fee.  Payment must be made within 3 days of notification by cash, money order or credit card.

Job Opportunities

Applications are available for employment at the Recreation office at Short Beach. Applicants must return their application to the Recreation office at 1 Dorne Drive, Stratford, CT 06615. Applicants should be Stratford residents and 18 years of age. The Department is always looking for qualified volunteers to officiate, umpire, teach swimming, or donate their expertise in any program.
