ROTH EXHIBIT AT LIBRARY THROUGH OCTOBER

Photographer Exhibits Original Brass Valley Photography

“Brazen Grit: Images of Brass Valley" by Emery Roth II is the September/October art exhibit at the Stratford Library. The Washington, Connecticut artist is making his first appearance at the library with his original photography. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be on display in the library's Main Lobby through October.

Brass Valley refers to the area of Connecticut from Bridgeport to Winsted where brass was made and eventually turned into clips to clocks to the fittings for industry and the weapons of war. Roth was able to witness and photograph the final chapter in the story of Brass Valley as the last mills were being picked and detoxified prior to demolition in 2013. His book, Brass Valley: The Fall of an American Industry, documents his journey into time and culture as it seeks to revive in words and pictures, a place in time and a place in the American dream. A small selection of his astonishing photographs are part of the “Brazen Grit” exhibit at the Library where Roth will also present a slide show and talk on November 5 as part of the Library’s “Sunday Afternoon Talks” series.

Viewing hours for "Brazen Grit" are Monday-Thursday: 10-8 and Friday-Saturday: 10-5. Starting October 1, the Library will also be opened on Sundays from 1-5 pm. The art exhibit will continue through Tuesday, October 31 at the Stratford Library, 2203 Main Street in Stratford, Connecticut.

      TAKE THE SHOT

      Photographer Exhibits Eclipse Photos

Photos of the 2017 eclipse by Stratford photographer Raleigh Padgett are currently on display at the Stratford Library. Padgett drove to Greer, South Carolina to photograph the historic eclipse that occurred on August 21. Taking photos since his teenage years Padgett recalled the day of the photo shoot: "At the moment of totality, camera pointed to the heavens, I was amazed and in awe of the moment. The wind stopped blowing, the air grew cool, the animals, bugs and birds went silent. “Take the shot.” Padgett's six-photo essay of the eclipse is on exhibit in the Library's Main Lobby through November.

SHAKESPEARE TROUPE RETURNS TO STRATFORD LIBRARY

Hudson Shakespeare Company to Perform “Macbeth” on October 21

The Stratford Library announces that the Hudson Shakespeare Company of New Jersey will return to Stratford on Saturday, October 21 at 2 pm for a special Halloween season offering of “Macbeth”. The company, which has brought its summer series of outdoor Shakespeare for the last several seasons to Stratford, will perform “Macbeth” in the Library’s Lovell Room. The fully-staged and costumed performance is free and open to the public.

Halloween is not usually a subject associated with Shakespeare, but the Bard of Avon, who created vivid scenes of English kingship and Italian romances, could also offer chills and scenes of bloody horror. The Bard did weave dark elements into his plays which were often based on folklore and traditional superstition like “Titus Andronicus” and “Richard III”. But no Shakespeare play is more closely associated with the witches, black magic, ghosts or other shades of Halloween than “Macbeth”.

“If you’re looking for a dark, spooky story for Halloween filled with blood, murder and paranormal elements, “Macbeth” has it all”, said director Jon Ciccarelli. “On one level, it’s a Scottish version of “Game of Thrones” with witches as the play’s supernatural puppet masters. They oversee a couple, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, who sell their souls for political power and cause an entire country to go to hell with them.”

The Hudson Shakespeare Company production of “Macbeth” will begin at 2 pm on October 21 at the Stratford Library, 2203 Main Street in Stratford, Connecticut. Doors open at 1:30 pm for general seating.

For further information, call the Library at 203.385.4162 or visit: www.stratfordlibrary.org.
