Juneteenth Flag Raising

Please join us tomorrow for our Juneteenth flag raising ceremony! The ceremony will take place in front of Town Hall at 9:00am on Tuesday, June 18th.

Juneteenth, alternatively known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Cel-Liberation Day, nationally recognizes June 19th, 1865, which is the date that Union General Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, TX explaining all previously enslaved people in Texas – the most remote part of the former Confederacy – were free.

The event will feature remarks by Cynthia Griffin, the founder of Juneteenth Celebrations in Fairfield County. Reverend Sandra Hadland of the First Baptist Church of Stratford will also be speaking. The Juneteenth flag will be raised by Town Councilors René Gibson, Anthony Afriyie and Alvin O’Neal, and Fire Chief Jermaine Atkinson. I encourage all to attend the ceremony.

Please note Stratford Town Hall and other Town Buildings will be closed on Wednesday, June 19th in observation of Juneteenth.
